Stockport Business Awards Finalists 2014 – How to Join a Winning Team

By July 11, 2014 Career Advice and Tips

We are over the moon to be shortlisted for the Stockport Business Awards 2014 in the Best Business Under £1million Turnover.  This is great recognition for our team who work so hard.  How do you join a winning team in your next employer?

When considering an employer, what do you look for?  Close to home, nice offices, big salary, well known brand, friendly team, growing company…. these are a good starting point, but a real winning team will go beyond that.  Here is what to look for:

Training and development opportunities – on the job or formal courses.

Progression – this could be within the company, or in a few years, within the industry.

A culture of continuous improvement and improvement.  Look for adoption of social media, new technologies, processes and new ways of doing things.

An ability to change – a dynamic company will recognise when it is time to adapt to changing market conditions and will emulate the very best competitors (if not overtake them).  They will target more profitable markets and carve out a niche for themselves.

A common goal and values – a winning team will always have their eyes on the prize and will pull together to achieve the same goal.

Limitless opportunities – if a company offers uncapped commission, this is a great sign that the company will keep on seizing new opportunities to win new business.  They will not stop once the targets have been hit, they will keep going.

Extra curricular activities – this week alone we have supported a 5 a side football tournament, a quiz night and a seminar hosted by a local business.  We have been blind bowling, speaking to students in local colleges and to the casino too.  All have given us opportunities to engage with other local businesses, share ideas, learn new skills and meet potential candidates.

A common goal and values – a winning team will always have their eyes on the prize and will pull together to achieve the same goal.

A winning team will not stand still doing what they have always done; they will move with the times.  Think of how Germany beat Brazil this week, they kept on scoring, they had a team all aiming on goal, they constantly evolved the team and kept an eye on the competition.   When you go to interview, it is a 2 way process, you are interviewing the client too.  Look out for all the above and you will be on to a winner with your next job.
