Selling the same products over and over is boring – wouldn’t you rather work on bespoke products and more complex projects where you can use your engineering expertise?
Because of your background in chemical or mechanical engineering, you will become a trusted advisor to customers in sectors like oil and gas, or process engineering because of your technical knowledge of pressure vessels and pipework. Typically, you’ll be preparing 1-2 quotations a day for bespoke products for niche purposes. Most of your quotations will convert because you know what questions to ask to get to the bottom of their technical requirements.
You don’t need to use the hard-sell because you’ll mostly be dealing with repeat business – in fact, there aren’t even any sales targets! Instead you’ll be selling products that are high quality and most appropriate for the client’s technical specifications – if customers just want the cheapest option then you’re not the right supplier for them!
You’ll be part of a team of 20 staff on site, including manufacturing, as well as all the white-collar staff like yourself upstairs in an open plan office, so even though you get the benefits of working for a multi-national business like a generous pension and holiday allowance, the office has a small business feel. Your salary gets topped up with a quarterly bonus based on your performance, and the company is looking for people they can upskill to join them – much of their workforce has been with the company long term, so they want to bring on new people like you who can bring new ideas and energy into the business.
